Our History

We are the speech-language pathology team for children. We have been leaders in this community for 30 years. The practice was begun in 1976 by Karen D. Culhane, MS in Arcadia. In 1988 Margaret H. Briggs, PhD assumed ownership and two years later moved the practice to our present location in Pasadena. Prior to being the Executive Director of Briggs & Associates, Margaret was on the faculty at California State University at Los Angeles and the Director of Training in Communication Disorders at the University Affiliated Program at Childrens Hospital, Los Angeles.

We believe our logo clearly represents our philosophy and purpose. It was inspired by the paper dolls Margaret’s grandmother used to make for her when she was growing up in New York. The children holding hands remind us to go out in the world together: supporting and learning from each other. The balloons evoke an image of hope—rising above and flying higher. Many years ago Margaret stitched this quote (you’ll see it hanging in her office now) that embodies our beliefs and values:

“To laugh often and love much;
To win the respect of intelligent persons
and the affection of children;
To earn the approbation of honest critics
and to endure the betrayal of false friends;
To appreciate beauty;
To find the best in others;
To give of one’s self,
To leave the world a bit better,
whether by a healthy child, a garden patch,
or a redeemed social condition;
To have played and laughed with enthusiasm
and sung with exultation;
To know that even one life has breathed easier
because you have lived---
This is to have succeeded.”
