Assess

Our initial assessments are done as a team. Two speech-language pathologists observe a child’s communication abilities as part of developmentally appropriate activities. We arrange the room with a basket of toys and select other materials to meet each child’s unique needs. Parents are active participants in our assessment process. We seek out, listen to, and carefully analyze the reports, observations, and insights of parents and professionals who interact regularly with a child. We compare each child’s abilities to developmental expectations.

We offer a detailed intake process where families can talk to a member of the team before an appointment is made. There is no cost or obligation. This first conversation can help families decide if an assessment is necessary and if we are the best place for that service to take place. We have an extensive list of resources; consequently, we can refer to other appropriate service providers if we don't believe we are the best match.

We believe in ongoing, regular assessments as part of our treatment. We evaluate each child's progress and the appropriateness of our treatment plan and strategies during each session. We conduct regular re-evaluations and write progress reports at least every 6 months. We do not believe that formal standardized tests are necessarily the best way to evaluate children's abilities. We may choose to use standardized tests to answer specific questions, however we do not rely on them to provide us with definitive answers.
